Gruesome School Bus Crash Fatality Ends in Family Filing Suit

In a horrific incident which claimed the life of six-year-old Edmond Bock IV, a school bus accident which took place earlier this month has led to a lawsuit. Edmond was walking across the street while his mother, Candice Bock, looked on from the sidewalk and his three-year-old brother waved at him through the window of the family home. Not 10 feet from his house, Edmond walked in front of the school bus while it was parked—allegedly in accordance with regulations set forth by the school district—and the driver began to drive the vehicle forward, causing Edmond to become pinned by the bus, resulting in his immediate death.

The driver continued down the road, in spite of the cries of protest of Candice Bock and her younger son, who saw Edmond get hit by the bus and watched in horror as his body was dragged down the road as the bus continued on, apparently oblivious to the child that had been hit and was still trapped beneath the vehicle. Another driver on the road flagged down the bus, informing the driver that the bloodied body of a boy was caught up under the bus.

The Edmonds have filed a claim, citing negligence on the part of the bus operator, the bus owner, and the school district in causing the wrongful death of their young relative by way of negligence. The family has stated that they feel Edmond’s death was entirely preventable, and that without policy changes the same tragedy might befall someone else in the future.

A police investigation revealed negative results of toxicology tests performed on the driver following the accident, so drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been a factor in the crash. Bus tracking data showed no recklessness or breaking of the speed limit by the bus. Nevertheless, GPS data and toxicology reports cannot show whether the driver was distracted and looking somewhere other than straight ahead when he drove his vehicle over Edmond Bock IV. The Bock family hope that their suit will lead to adjustment of state policies and thus, help to prevent the deaths or injuries of other children in the future.

Nearly a Dozen Dead Following Texas Prisoner Bus Crash

A bus owned by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice was carrying 15 passengers on the morning of Wednesday, January 14, 2015 when the driver lost control of the vehicle on an icy road, causing the bus to smash into a train, killing 10 people on board. Two correctional officers died in the collision, and eight prisoners also lost their lives. The remaining five people on board sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity following the crash. Two engineers were on board the freight train at the time of the accident, but neither of them reported any injury. Injured parties are reportedly being evaluated and treated at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.

The train was a Union Pacific freighter, and was in motion at the time the bus slammed into it. The bus was allegedly traveling along Interstate 20 when it skidded on the icy roadway, then careened off an overpass, crashing into the train below. The bus was traveling on a journey of several hundred miles, en route from a correctional facility in Abilene to a different facility in El Paso at the time the accident took place.

The prisoners were traveling without seatbelts and handcuffed together, two to a seat. Some of the people on the bus at the time of the accident, including the decedents, flew out of the windows of the bus upon impact. The only seat on the bus equipped with seatbelts was the driver’s seat. The bus was considered to be in good working mechanical condition at the time of the accident, with officials reporting that it was brand new and had been in use for less than a year.

The bus was a total loss, with its top entirely smashed in following the crash. The train remained halted for some hours following the crash, with one train car badly dented and debris—mostly packages from United Parcel Service—surrounding the crash site. The National Transportation Safety Board has enlisted an investigation team to come out to evaluate the scene of the crash.

Brooklyn Bus Crash Injures Dozens

A public transit bus traveling down Utica Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, collided with a speeding car on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 7, 2015, leaving at least two dozen people injured. The vehicle at fault for the accident, described as a black BMW, was reportedly speeding down Utica Avenue heading south when it smashed into a Nissan Maxima, causing the BMW to spin out of control before slamming headlong into the B46 New York City bus, which had been traveling north on Utica Avenue at the time of the crash.

Injuries resulting from the collision range from minor to life-threatening, with at least three people still in critical condition following the crash. The most severe injuries were reportedly sustained by people who were in the BMW and Nissan at the time of the incident. Witnesses who worked at nearby businesses in the area have consistently reported that the BMW was speeding at the time of the crash on a stretch of road whose speed limit had recently been slowed from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour, in light of a slew of pedestrian-versus-vehicle deaths in the area.

Witnesses reported seeing people covered in blood deboarding the bus after the accident, and at least one witness is quoted as having stated that “the two cars were to blame.” The Nissan was allegedly pulling out of a grocery store parking lot onto Utica Avenue near the intersection with Clarendon Road when the BMW struck it in a T-bone fashion, leaving the Nissan severely damaged and the people inside it with critical wounds.

Nineteen of the 25 injuries reported thus far are described by first responders as having been minor. There is no word as to whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the crash. As the police investigation continues, officials have stated that the driver of the black BMW is expected to face charges following the incident.

Indiana Megabus Crash Leaves Dozens Hurt

A double-decker Megabus en route to Atlanta from Chicago crashed onto its side early in the morning of Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, leaving dozens of people hurt and stranded in the southern part of Indiana where the incident took place. The bus driver, a man by the name of Christopher Kelley, reported to investigators that he was attempting to merge from the left lane in to the right lane on Interstate 65 when he lost control of the vehicle and the bus slid off the roadway, landing on its side in the grassy area next to the road.

Almost 70 passengers were on board the bus at the time of the accident. Of those, at least 26 were injured, though no injuries have been reported as being life-threatening. Investigators have stated that the driver’s speed as well as inclement weather may have played a role in the crash, as the winter season brings cold and snowy weather to the area, as well as unpredictable high winds.

This is not the first Megabus to crash on Interstate 65 in Indiana. In October, another vehicle owned by Megabus crashed on the same route, leading to many injured passengers. Indiana State Troopers have reported that the interstate has seen quite a few accidents recently. It is not yet known whether speed may have been a factor in this particular crash, but there have been no reports of whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role in this incident.

Injured parties were taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana and to Methodist Hospital in the state’s capital. One of the injured was reported to be a pregnant woman who sustained a facial cut in the accident. Parties who did not report injuries were transported to nearby Seymour Middle School where they were met by members of the Red Cross, who had constructed a temporary shelter for the passengers at the school.

Thai Tour Bus Crash Injures All on Board

A tour bus carrying 11 people overturned and crashed on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, leaving all on board suffering from injuries. At least five of the injuries are considered to be severe, according to reports. All who were on board at the time of the crash were taken to hospitals in nearby Phuket, where they are being treated for injuries ranging from bone fractures to contusions. There is no word on the current condition of any of the injured parties.

The bus was transporting Chinese tourists, a Chinese tour guide, a Thai tour guide and the driver of the bus in the Phang Nga province when the incident took place. The driver stated that the weather conditions were rainy, leaving the wet roads difficult to navigate. The driver reported losing control of the bus while taking a turn, which led to the bus overturning and landing on its side.

The five most seriously injured parties were transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital, while those less gravely injured were taken to Phang Nga Hospital. Those with only minor injuries were treated on site by first responders and released. The individuals who sustained the least severe injuries are reported to be assisting local police with investigating the accident by providing their testimony about what took place just prior to the crash.

The bus was en route to a day at a local spa when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed. The bus in question was equipped to seat up to 24 passengers, so overcrowding is not currently thought to be a factor in the crash. There has been no word about whether the driver of the bus was tested for drugs or alcohol following the crash. An investigation will be conducted by police with the assistance of the newly opened Chinese consul-general office, which exists to provide support in the endeavor of increasing tourism safety in Phuket and the rest of Thailand.

Bus Driver Dies After Being Run Over

A bus driver lost her life when the vehicle she was operating ran her over in Miami-Dade, Florida late in the afternoon of Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 in what is being called a “freak accident.” The driver reportedly exited her bus after parking it and then noticed that the bus was rolling forward. The driver scrambled beside the bus, running alongside it in an attempt to reach in through the driver’s-side window to engage the emergency brake. However, as she reached in she was caught under the front wheel of the bus and run over, dying immediately.

The incident took place near the intersection of 79th Street and Northwest 32nd Avenue, near the Northside Metrorail Station. Another bus had stopped to offer assistance following the incident, but was not itself involved in the crash. The bus involved in the accident had rolled onto the sidewalk and into a nearby grassy area before coming to a stop. Police, members of the fire department and an ambulance were on scene, but nothing could be done to save the woman’s life after the accident.

The driver’s identity has not been released at this time, pending notification of her family. No passengers were on board the bus at the time of the accident, nor were any other injuries or fatalities sustained as a result of the incident. There is no word as to whether mechanical failure or driver error may have been to blame for the bus’ rolling forward following the driver’s exit from the vehicle, nor is it known whether an investigation into the cause of the accident will be initiated as a result of the tragic outcome.

According to statistics from the Florida Crash Statistics Report of 2010, of the more than 300,000 vehicular crashes in the state that year, roughly 2,000 of them involved buses, with 25 of those accidents resulting in fatal injuries.

Cuban Bus Crash Injures Dozens

A tour bus en route to Varadero Beach smashed into a truck on Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, leaving more than 40 people injured, with nine in life-threatening condition, according to reports from area hospital officials. Two of the injured parties had to undergo amputation of their limbs, and eight are reported as requiring craniofacial surgery as a result of their injuries. All injured persons are being treated at Gustavo Aldereguia University Hospital in Cienfuegos Province near central Cuba, some 160 miles southeast of the nation’s capital of Havana.

Many of the people who were hurt in the crash were French tourists on board the bus at the time of the crash, though the truck driver and a tour guide are also reported as having sustained injuries. The bus and truck were allegedly traveling alongside one another when the bus was struck by the truck and dragged along the roadway for some distance before coming to a halt. A crane was called to the scene to lift the bus off the ground in order to free passengers who had been trapped beneath it.

The tourists were returning to Varadero following a visit to a monument erected in memory of revolutionary Che Guevara located in Santa Clara. Many of those on the bus at the time of the accident were senior citizens who hailed from Normandy. The French Embassy has stated that plans to return the injured parties to France following treatment have been put in place in light of the emergent nature of the situation.

Cuba receives much of its national revenue through the tourism industry, with up to three million people expected to visit in 2014. During the winter months, people come from all over Latin America, Europe and Canada to visit the island destination, whose weather is notoriously pleasant year-round.

California Tour Bus Crash Ends in Fatality

A California tour bus en route to Washington state left the roadway near Pollard Flat in Shasta County and overturned on the morning Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, leaving at least one person dead and dozens of others wounded. The bus had allegedly been involved in a crash earlier that day, having bumped into a restaurant building but neither sustaining nor causing any serious damages of injuries in that accident.

It is estimated that 33 people were on the bus at the time of the fatal accident, and all of those who survived are currently being treated at an area hospital for their injuries, two of whom were transported there by helicopter due to the life-threatening nature of their wounds. There is no word at this time as to the condition of any of the passengers who were on the bus at the time of the accident. Witnesses reported seeing injured passengers wrapped in “shock blankets,” some of them stained with the blood of the wounded.

The victim who lost his life in the crash has not yet had his identity made public, but it is known that he was a 33 year old male. The driver of the bus has been identified as 67-year-old Jose Garcilazo Palencia who hails from Los Angeles County, California. The bus was reportedly traveling along northbound Interstate 5 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and left the highway, sliding down an embankment and overturning onto Eagles Roost Road below. The bus landed on its roof, which was crushed from the force of the crash. The damages to the bus were extensive, making for a total loss.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, and at this time driver fatigue is strongly suspected in playing a role in the crash. There is no suspicion of drugs or alcohol being a factor in the accident, nor is there any explanation as to why the bus was permitted to continue traveling after the first minor accident it had been involved in that day.

Dropkick Murphys Tour Bus Crash Ends in Fatality

In an accident that is being called a “suspected suicide,” the bus transporting the Irish-American punk rock band Dropkick Murphys collided with a pedestrian in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014 on Highway 35 near Austin en route to a concert in Tulsa, ending in the death of said pedestrian. The man who lost his life has yet to be identified.

Members of the band described the incident as a “tragic and fatal accident” on their Twitter page, stating that the man darted out in front of the bus as it was traveling along the roadway. The man reportedly died instantly, and the police investigation continues in order to determine if the crash was indeed an intentional act of suicide.

The driver of the bus swerved upon seeing the pedestrian jump in front of the bus, but was unable to avoid striking and killing the man. Although physically uninjured, the tour bus driver was psychologically traumatized by the incident and unable to continue on. The band canceled their Tulsa tour date with apologies to their fans, asking those who follow their Twitter page to pray for the fallen pedestrian and his family during this tragic time.

The bus sustained damage in the accident, leaving it inoperable following the crash. The band’s manager has stated that the band members are declining further comment pending the notification of the deceased’s family out of respect for the man’s life, whom police describe only as a “white man.” Police officers reportedly told members of the band that the stretch of road where the accident occurred is notorious in the area as a “suicide spot.”

The band intends to continue their tour as soon as they are able to, as the next leg of their journey is scheduled to take them south of the international border to Mexico and South America, beginning with a show in Mexico City next week. Ticket prices for any concerts they miss as a result of the accident will be fully refunded.

Spanish Bus Crash Leaves More Than a Dozen Dead

A tour bus transporting 55 people home from a religious trip to the capital city of Spain veered off the road near the town of Cieza on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, leaving 14 people dead and dozens more injured. The bus was reportedly carrying a church group home from an excursion to Madrid when the driver, for reasons unknown, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and go skidding down a steep embankment, where it landed on its side.

Ten people on board the bus at the time of the accident lost their lives in the crash, while four more died while being treated for their injuries in an area hospital. Drugs and alcohol are not thought to be a factor in the crash, as the driver was tested immediately after the accident and yielded a clean result, but the reason for the bus leaving the roadway remains a mystery at this time.

Hundreds of first responders were on scene in the wake of the accident, providing treatment to the injured until they could be safely transported to an area hospital. In all, 38 people sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity, with many of the crash victims still in critical condition. Funerals for the crash victims who were killed will be held on Monday, Nov. 10, 2014, and the king and queen of Spain have spoken up and said they intend to be present at the funerals.

Police are still looking into the cause of the crash which took so many lives. People on board have reported hearing the driver shouting about an inability to engage the brakes on the bus in the moments just prior to the crash. The driver is facing criminal charges, as there is some suspicion that he may have been driving in an unsafe manner and that the crash may have occurred due to negligence on his part.

The mayor of Bullas, the town from which most of the passengers on board the bus hailed, had declared an official three-day mourning period for the town. The Spanish Prime Minister has expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating on Twitter that the accident has “deeply affected” him.
