Monday Morning Madness in Manila – Two Bus Accidents

Manila was at the center of the latest road accidents on Monday morning. Two separate incidents resulted in more than 32 injuries. The first of the incidents occurred in Makati City, while the other took place in the Skyway, which is located in the Metro Manila region.

In Metro Manila, around 21 people were injured as the bus they were traveling in crashed against an elevated region present in the southern section of Metro Manila. The incident took place early in the morning, around 9:30 am. The bus involved in the accident was moving from Laguna province and was headed towards Cubao, which is located in Quezon City. The accident and its corresponding details were first reported by Mao dela Cruz from radio dzBB.

According to early reports that have emerged so far, the bus belonging to Greenstar crashed near the toll plaza into a cement barrier. The driver of the bus claimed that the bus brakes failed, causing the bus to go out of control and consequently crash. It was fortunate that there were no casualties in the accident, and the injured were swiftly taken away for treatment. The injured passengers were taken to Ospital ng Muntinlupa for further checkups and medical examinations.

In the other accident that took place in Makati City, two buses collided, injuring 11 people. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority reported the accident, which also took place early on Monday morning.

Radio dzBB was the first to report the accident. Charlie Nozares from Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and said that the accident in Makati City took place near the corner of Estrella Street and Epifanio Delos Santos.

The 11 injured people were taken to a nearby hospital for checkups and other medical examinations as authorities swiftly arrived at the scene of the accident to determine the cause of the accident. As of now, there are no concrete reports about how the two buses came to collision and which party was more at fault. The amount of damage that was inflicted on the buses is also undetermined at the moment.

Nozares also reported that of the two buses that were involved in the accident, one was air conditioned while the other was an ordinary non-air-conditioned bus.

No other authority figure could be reached for comment regarding the Monday accidents, although the grave number of injuries suggests that greater road safety is needed in the Manila area.

Several Girls Injured in Kansas Bus Crash

On Wednesday, twenty sixth-grade Kansas girls got injured in a school bus accident when the bus overturned on a curving highway ramp while moving at a very high speed, as reported by authorities.

Kansas bus accident

The driver and the eighteen injured students were taken to five different hospitals in the area around eighteen miles from Kansas City. The girls who got injuries mostly suffered from broken bones, fractures, bruises and cuts.

Many students had serious injuries. It isfeared that some of these injuries might also include a brain injury or a spinal injury. The spokeswoman of the University of Kansas Hospital, Jill Chadwick, spoke to the city police and reported that one of the students may have a major, serious, spinal injury.

Later on Wednesday, five of the girls were expected to recover from their injuries and to be released from the University of Kansas Hospital. An additional three to four people were to be kept in the hospital for the night.

The school bus was carrying about thirty-six students from the private school Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City.  As the State Highway Patrol reported to KCTV, it was because of the high driving speed that the bus slid off the exit ramp that connected Kansas 32 with Kansas 7 in Bonner Springs. The bus rolled over around 1 p.m. CT.

A witness said that he saw that the children were coming out of the bus screaming, crying and calling out for their mothers.

Kate Banks, a mother of two sisters who were also in the bus when the accident happened, said that she confirmed from her girls that the speed of the bus was too fast while they were going on the ramp and that is why they rolled over.

Both of Kate’s daughters were taken to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. One of her daughters had a possible collar bone injury, while the other had suffered an elbow injury. Both the girls had scrapes and cuts on their bodies.

Another bus from the Pembroke Hill School, which was carrying the sixth-grade boys was also following the girls bus. Luckily, the second bus did not get involved in the accident.

A Pembroke official reported that the students were taken by the bus to Linwood, Kansas for an overnight bonding experience camp. This was arranged for the children in order to start a new year of school at Pembroke Hill School.

Twelve Injured in a Tour Bus Crash

At Sunday night, a tour bus in Las Vegas met with an accident near the Maryland Parkway and Desert Inn Road. A total of fifteen people were involved in the accident, twelve of whom were hurt and injured.

chain reaction bus accident
The injured people were sent to the Sunrise hospital to recover from minor injuries. The positive side of this is that the accident involved no death, and from the people who were injured, none of them were in serious condition.

As told by the witnesses, the cars were stopped at a red light when the bus approached the intersection. The driver of the bus rammed the bus into the cars. The bus itself was empty and had no passengers in it. It had “Herrera Coaches” written on it.

The accident took place at around 5:30 p.m. The bus driver hit the cars in such a way that it caused a kind of chain reaction in between the cars, and the collision continued until it involved several cars. In the end, the bus crashed into a light pole. Prentis Williams, who was one of the witnesses, said that the sound of the accident was as if there was a big explosion. Other witnesses said that the sound of the accident actually terrified them.

Witnesses of the accident also said that the bus driver tried to escape the scene right after the accident took place, but the people present at the event on the road did not let him go until the police officers were there.

On the investigation of the metro police department, they got to know from the driver that the driver had smoked spice. Spice is a kind of drug, a type of synthetic marijuana. It is available in the markets by several other names. Some of the ingredients in spice are strictly not allowed by the lawmakers, but the manufacturers find other chemical replacements to make it stay legal.

Another witness of the accident expressed his anger, saying that other harmful things like bath salts were taken off from the market and were not allowed to be sold on the market, so why was this drug not prohibited and removed from the market? It is dangerous, he added.

A representative from Herrera Coaches was not available to comment on all that happened. However, the police said that they will further investigate the main reasons that actually caused the accident.

Montenegro bus crash

Sources reported that the bus was carrying about forty-eight passengers in it, along with a tourist guide and two drivers, all of which were Romanian citizens. The bus was traveling towards Adriatic Sea.

The bus involved in the accident had the license plate number B 123 MMJ. According to the reports, it was concluded that the bus was moving through mountainous terrain on a very narrow road during a heavy rainstorm. The exact details of how the accident occurred or how the bus crashed and fell are still unknown. It is clear that the bus slipped off the road and fell into a deep valley that was about 40 meters below the road.

In the accident, eighteen people were killed and another thirty people got injured. From the injured, many are still in intensive care and are in critical condition.

The rescue team met with large difficulties in rescuing the survivors. The rocky terrain and rough landmark greatly hindered the rescue team when they arrived to rescue the survivors.

When the accident took place, a local child who was walking on the road also got hit by the bus and sustained minor injuries. The time when the horrifying accident occurred was around 5 to 6 pm.

The interior minister of Montenegro, Rasko Konjevic declared the accident to be extremely serious. A national day of mourning will be decreed most probably at the end of the week. The 26th of June was decided to be the date for the day of national mourning and so, in solidarity with Romania, Montenegro also announced a national day of mourning. This was to show sorrow for the Romanian people who died in the tragic accident on the 23rd of June, 2013.

Greyhound Bus Accident Closes down Highway in Kalamazoo County

On a Thursday, a Greyhound bus on I-94 bumped into a semi-trailer from the back. The driver and 22 other people got injured, one of whom is in a critical condition.

According to Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas, at 10:16 am, the bus on the Toronto-Chicago route, consisting of 48 passengers along with the driver got hit by a truck that was east of Galesburg.

Greyhound bus accident

As reported by Sheriff Richard Fuller, the truck looked like it was about to enter the westbound lanes near exit number 88, and then the back of the truck got hit by the bus.

Fuller’s statement said that they are not completely aware of what happened, whether it was the truck that suddenly came in front of the bus or something else that caused the wreck.

The driver of the bus was stuck for 2 hours in the wreck after the accident. The rescuers slowly removed the wreckage in order to free the driver, after which he was monitored by a doctor. He was then taken to an ambulance waiting for victims at site using a stretcher.

Fuller said, “He could not free his legs of the remains of the wreckage, so instead the doctor remained present at all times to monitor the condition of the driver.”

Later, on Thursday, out of those nine people who were sent to hospitals in Kalamazoo, seven people were given treatments in the hospital and were released, while a passenger from the front seat, who was in a critical condition, was sent off to Borgess Medical Center to get better facilities and care. The driver had minor injuries and was admitted to Bronson Methodist Hospital.

The westbound part of the highway remained closed for hours because of the accident, causing the motorists to stay away from the accident site. The drivers passing by the eastbound lanes were very much interested in taking pictures and looking at the wreck, which slowed down the traffic.

As part of the reconstruction of the accident, the deputies started taking measurements as soon as the reinforcements helped the bus driver out of the wreck.

Fuller said that the trailer and bus got stuck together and that the truck driver drove the truck off road hundreds of feet. The truck driver had a scratched finger and felt a pain in his neck, but did not think it was important to seek medical attention.

Fuller reported that all the bus passengers were out by the time he reached the scene. The 37 other passengers were transported through a metro bus to a bus station at Kalamazoo. They stayed over there and waited for the Detroit Greyhound bus.

Three Die in a Bus Accident in Indiana

On Saturday afternoon, a bus that was on its way back from a church camp in Michigan headed towards Indiana crashed only a few minutes away from home, taking the lives of three people, while 26 injured were sent to hospitals, said officials.

The bus hit the retaining wall coming in a high speed, twisted around a curve and overturned.

Indiana bus accident

The accident took place at around 4:15 pm, which was the time of arrival stated by the church’s youth pastor in a tweet. According to the director of Public Safety of Indianapolis, what adds to the tragedy is that they were just so near to home.

Among the dead were a man and his wife, while the identity of the third victim was not provided by the authorities, said Riggs, the director.

The crash site was covered with scattered cloths, seat cushions, pillows and two shattered windows as well. Before heading to the church, Riggs and Mayor Greg Ballard visited the crash site and witnessed all of this. According to Riggs, the accident was a great tragedy, because after the observation of the crash site, they came to the conclusion that they saw no sign that would indicate that the driver had any medical emergency. Ballard said investigations were being carried out on the bus and the crash scene as to figure out the real cause for such a tragedy.

The witnesses were told by the driver that his brakes had failed, WTHR-TV reported. However, it was not mentioned that the bus owned by the church, which carried 37 passengers had any mechanical issues, said the Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush.

5 people were trapped inside the bus after the accident and were freed by the crew, said the Fire Department of Indianapolis. Even before the very first responders arrived, people had stopped by to help the victims. One such man pulled the driver from the bus. The victims included children and adults, as reported by the fire officials.

Nine of the victims of the crash, including one in critical condition, were sent to the IU Health Methodist Hospital. According to the hospital spokeswoman Sally Winter, three of those nine were treated and released. On the other hand, she added that ten others were sent to the Riley Hospital for Children. Seven out of those ten were treated and discharged, she confirmed

People were urged to use caution nearby the accident scene, and roads were closed. The diesel spills were in the meanwhile being cleaned by the hazardous materials crew.

Fifteen Egyptian Soldiers Killed in Bus Crash

On their way home for the holy holiday known as Ramadan, fifteen Egyptian soldiers were killed after their bus crashed into a truck on a highway near the country’s coast. The wreck happened on Sunday July 21, 2013.

The deadly accident happened on the road between Cairo and the city of Alexandria. The soldiers were headed home to spend the holy month of Ramadan with their families, according to reports by the Associated Press.

Egypt bus accident

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims all across the world observe the holy month by fasting. This month is considered one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The month either lasts for twenty-nine or thirty days depending on the phases of the moon.

During Ramadan, fasting is done from dawn until the sun sets. Muslims also do not participate in the drinking of liquids, smoking of any type of tobacco, or any type of sexual relations. They also do not swear during this holy time.

Fasting is not a twenty-four hour thing. They do serve food and drink daily. The food and drinks are served before the sun rises and after the sun sets.

A total of forty people were also injured in the crash. The injured were taken to the Nile Delta province of Beheira for medical treatment.

It is estimated that over 12,000 people die across Egypt each year due to road traffic accidents.  The country has a road traffic fatality rate of forty-two deaths per one hundred thousand people, according to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Road accidents in Egypt are common due to badly maintained roads and also to the fact that traffic laws are very poorly enforced. For many years, Egyptians have complained to their government about the chronic problems that their roadways have. Lack of law enforcement upholding traffic laws is another serious issue that adds to the mounting deaths each year on Egyptian highways. Egyptian officials state that they just do not have the funds necessary to put law enforcement in any formidable numbers out onto the highways to enforce the laws. Speeding is the main cause of Egyptian highway accidents.

According to a 2012 World Health Organization report, “road accidents kill about 12,000 people each year in the country with a population of about 90 million.” Poor road conditions and lax traffic law enforcement are blamed.

Back in October of 2012, twenty-one members of the country’s security forces were killed in an automobile accident located on a stretch of road in the Sinai peninsula, which is close to the Israeli border.

Back in November of 2012, the country’s transport minister resigned after a school bus accident resulted in the death of fifty children between the ages of four and six. The children were killed when their bus was struck by a train near the town of Manfalut, which is located about 350km (230 miles) south of Cairo.

Four Killed in Kollam Bus Accident

Five people were killed in India in a bus accident between a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus and a private bus near Chadayamangalam on Monday July 15, 2013. Among the dead are four women. Fifty-five passengers were injured, twenty-five of them critically. More deaths are expected. The accident happened around 9:40 a.m. on Main Central Road.

India bus crash

The victims of the crash include two from Thiruvananthapuram, Priya Augustine, 33, Thara Shashidharan, 53. Two other victims were Ambili, 45, and her daughter Jayashree, 19, of Anchal. Priya was killed instantly, and Thara and Jayashree died from their injuries hours later at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Priya was a teacher at a local secondary school. She was seated near the window on the fourth row from the driver. Priya and Thara were on board the KSRTC bus, while Ambili and Jayashree were passengers on the private bus.

Fourteen of the critically injured were taken to the Thiruvananthapuram MCH and eleven were transported to the Gokulam MCH at Venjaramoodu. Seventeen passengers suffered minor injuries and were transported to the Kadakkal hospital. Three injured were transported to the Chadayamangalam government hospital. The other passengers were treated and released.

The crash was so severe that the KSRTC bus had to be cut open with an electric cutter in order to get to trapped passengers. Traffic was halted in the area for more than two hours as victims were tended to and the accident site was cleaned up.

The Sreerangam stretch of road where the accident happened has a long history of serious crashes. Eight people were killed in the same sharp curve back in December of this year.

According to witnesses to the accident, the crash was caused when the driver of the private bus lost control while trying to take the curve because he entered it at too high a rate of speed. Witnesses say that the KSRTC bus attempted to swerve around the other bus to the left in an attempt to avoid the collision. The private bus then made impact with the right side of the bus.

Both buses were dragged approximately 20 meters before coming to a halt. At the time of the accident, there was a light rain. Eight rows of seats in the KSRTC bus were completely destroyed in the accident.

Emergency crews were on site within minutes of the crash. The rescue was led by Chadayamangalam Sub-Inspector Azad Abdul Kalam. Police, fire department and area locals all helped at the scene. An inquiry into the accident has been ordered by officials. A report needs to be submitted to authorities within two weeks.

A hospital spokesperson told media that the condition of seven of the critically injured was not hopeful, indicating that the death toll from this accident would most likely rise.

Ministers Adoor Prakash and K. C. Joseph, Mullakkara Ratnakaran MLA, KSRTC chairman and MD K. G. Mohanlal, Kollam Collector B. Mohanan and Kollam Rural SP S. Surendran all drove to the scene of the accident.

Louisville Students Injured in Bus Crash

On June 13, 2013, a bus that was carrying high school students back home from a trip to  Eastern Kentucky University went out of control and crashed. The accident happened on Interstate 64 in Jefferson County. Thirty students from Waggener High School in Louisville were taken to the local hospitals with an array of injuries. Four adults who were on the bus, including the bus driver, were injured.

The injured were taken to five different hospitals. All injured were reported at the time to be in stable condition.

Louisville bus accident

Norton Healthcare spokeswoman Maggie Roetker told media, “21 children were taken to three of its hospitals. Four remained hospitalized.”

Trauma surgeon at the University Hospital, Dr. Glen Franklin, said, ” Eleven people were taken to University Hospital and nine were admitted, all in stable condition.”

Law enforcement investigating the crash are looking into the possibility of mechanical failure as the cause. Specifically, they are looking into tire issues.

A video of the crash was recorded from the dashboard of a truck. The video shows  the bus veering left across three lanes of traffic then striking a concrete median. The accident left a trail of debris on the roadway.

Lynn Wehling, the driver of the truck that recorded the crash told media, ” It looked like the bus’s front left tire blew out. It swerved to the left really hard and hit the barrier.” Wehling  was a few cars behind the bus when he saw the crash unfold.

He was traveling westbound on I-64 near mile marker 23 when white smoke appeared, and the bus swerved from the far right lane into the left median.

All of the students aboard the bus will be juniors and seniors this upcoming school year. The adults on the bus were all staff members from the high school.

The kids were being transported to the University by a chartered bus service. The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. near the Jefferson-Shelby county line. The high school students were taking part in a program that gives them the opportunity to visit college campuses.

Waggener had sent seventy-two students to Eastern Kentucky University on two buses. When the students arrived at the University, they toured the campus from 10:30 a.m. until noon. After lunch they boarded the buses and headed back to Louisville. The second bus was not involved in the accident.  The bus not involved in the wreck eventually returned safely to the high school, where parents waited to pick them up.

The bus involved in the crash had 41 people on board. The passengers included 36 students. Eleven of the injured were taken to UOFL Hospital. Nine had been admitted, all were in stable condition. Seven people remained hospitalized for days after the accident. All were in fair condition, with injuries that include broken bones.

“He’s hurting. His nose is broken, and he may have bruised ribs,” said Victoria Mukes-Gully, whose son was injured in the accident.

Andrea Clifford, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokeswoman said, “a second accident occurred nearby in the eastbound lanes of I-64.”

9 Killed in Bus Accident in Central Spain

On Monday July 8, 2013 in Spain, a bus swerved off of the road and crashed. The accident caused nine deaths and injured 22 others, 5 seriously. The driver of the bus was arrested for reckless driving.

When the bus went off the road as it was coming down a mountain pass. The bus driver passed a drug and alcohol test, and the bus was fit for the road. However, the driver was arrested and was due to appear before a judge later in the day, accused of reckless driving resulting in death.”

Bus accident in Spain

Law enforcement has investigators are still trying to determine the bus’s speed at the time of the accident. The road surface had nothing to do with the accident.

The bus was owned by the company Cevasa and was a blue single-decker bus. The bus ended up on its side and was saved from going down a steep slope by a metal safety barrier that buckled severely, but did not break.

The entire right side of the bus was severely smashed, and all of the windows on that side were shattered. The bus scraped along a rocky wall before striking the metal barrier. The windshield of the bus hung open “like a curtain.”

Teams of firefighters, twelve ambulances, and two medical helicopters were on the scene. Six bodies were laid out on the road on N-403. The bodies were covered in white sheets.

Emergency services workers wore black helmets and tunics while they carried one passenger on a stretcher. Passengers who were lucky enough to escape without serious injury sat on a nearby curb. First aid personnel did their best to comfort them.

Disaster struck about six miles from the bus’s final destination around 8:45 a.m.

The central government representative for Avila, Ramiro Ruiz Medrano, told Spanish public radio, “It came off the road for unknown reasons. They are investigating the possible causes at the moment. There are some with very serious injuries, while others are in shock. The driver was uninjured, though Spanish media said he was in shock. The vehicle’s insurance papers and road worthiness certificates were all in order.”

A 6-year-old girl was flown over 60 miles by emergency helicopter to a hospital in the town of Salamanca.

The mother of the child told local media, “She is stable, but they have to examine her for trauma to the brain.”

Also among the injured, a 17-year-old girl and a 91-year-old woman were also taken to the Salamanca hospital.

Taken to the Sonsoles Hospital in Avila, sixteen-year-old Lucia Garcia is recovering. She was on the bus with two friends they were headed to Avila to shop.

“She has some broke bones in her wrist,” her 63 year old grandmother told media. “When she arrived she was in shock. It was very intense. She was trembling and crying because she had two friends in the bus.”

One of Garcia’s friends, a seventeen year old, was rushed to the Salamanca hospital with a serious head injury. Her other friend, who is 16, had to have stitches in her leg but suffered no broken bones.

The victim’s families gathered at the Avila sports stadium, where psychologists were made available to them.

This was Spain’s deadliest bus accident since 2008, when nine Finnish tourists were killed in an accident in the Andalusia region.
